Character Information
Character: Hythlodaeus
Canon: Final Fantasy 14/ End of Endwalker
Age: Old, like 12,000+ years
History: Link
Possessions: The clothes on his back, which consist of robes, boots, and a mask.
Weapon: N/A
Powers/Abilities:
- Soul Sight: Hythlodaeus is eminently gifted in the ability to see beyond the physical world and behold the flow of aether, the life-force of the world, and of magic. He also has the ability to see the color of a person’s soul; even perceiving a person by their soul at a great distance, and once, spotting Azem from across the city of Amourat. He can also behold the underworld and the lifestream. In this setting, I will put up a permissions post and probably handwave that his sight doesn’t always work in the Diadem.
- Creation Magic: All Ancients can use creation magic, which is exactly what it sounds like- creating objects and beings out of aether. However, they cannot create anything with a soul. Hythlodaeus, though being one of the few with the rare ability of soul sigh, he is significantly less adept at using creation magics. He can do simple things, like clothes or a weapon, but when compared to other ancients, he is basically very low-powered. He really only tries to use it when he absolutely has to.
- Teleportation: He can teleport. Usually a great distance, but for the sake of the game, I will be keeping it to very limited distances, if it even works at all.
- The Echo: He can use the aether around him to connect to another being or object, viewing memories of the past. I will communicate OOCly before using this. It also gives him the power to understand all beings regardless of language.
- Offensive Magic and combat support: Hythlodaeus is not a fighter, not having the same strength as others for magic; however, if pressed, he can hold his own. He is known as a “Soulseer” (a fancy Bard). He can create a bow and arrows out of aether and use basic bard spells, including some support spells. He can also use True Benediction to fully heal someone and True Resurrection to resurrect a person who is close to death but not actually dead. These abilities can be nerfed how ever the mods see fit.
Application Questions
Who is the most important person in their life and why? What might be different if this person hadn't been around?
Hades, aka Emet-Selch. His platonic life partner, if Ancients used terms like that. Childhood friends, both born with the rare ability to see souls. It's alluded to that they had been pretty inseparable for decades. Where Hythlodaeus wasn’t very gifted with magic, Hades surpassed everyone, and Hythlodaeus made it his goal in life to stay by his dear friend’s side and do everything he could to help him fulfill his goals before they would both return to the star together. He was never so happy as when he saw his friend smiling, and he once told Elidibus that he would eat his mask if it meant bringing a smile to his friend’s face.
If he didn’t have Hades in his life, it would have been shaped differently. Ancients believed that they all had a purpose to the Star, Etheyris, and once that purpose was fulfilled, they could return to the lifestream, having made the world a better place. Hythlodaeus wrapped his purpose in other people, two other people to be exact. Hades and Azem. Without Hades, he might not have ever found his purpose. He’s a natural caretaker of people, and he needed Hades to fill that need in himself. He might never have found anyone else to fill that role, and he might have stayed untethered, trying to find exactly what it was he was meant for.
Is there an event in your character's life that they'd do differently? How so and why?
With Hindsight being what it is, and with getting his memories back once he finally entered the Aetherial Sea, he might not have sacrificed himself to Zodiark. For no other reason than he would have wanted to try to be there with Emet all these hundreds of years. He sees his friend now and the pain and the weight of the grief he still carries, even though he can finally rest. He knows how incredibly lonely he was, and he wishes he could have been there to alleviate even a fraction of it. Would he have been sundered? Probably. Would he have been tempered? Probably. Would everything have had happened in the same manner? Also, probably, but at least his friend wouldn’t have been alone.
What's the greatest challenge you foresee your character facing in the setting? How might this impact their ability to adapt and in what ways will they confront this challenge?
Hythlodaeus isn’t accustomed to a world like this. Having lived his entire life in a veritable Upotia until the End of Days. And then, when the sky was literally falling around them, he deemed himself most useful as a sacrifice and not as someone who would be able to stay and fight. So the horrors of Diadem will throw him and probably affect him deeply. However, he will make every effort to adapt quickly, especially as he gets to know people and makes friends. He will want to help protect people, which will help him settle in. Also, Emet is here, and he will need to be okay with his environment so he can keep an eye on him. Emet will also probably play a large hand in helping him get used to everything.
What's the easiest thing you foresee your character adapting to in the setting?
Taking care of people. Hythlodaeus likes people, and he has a caring nature, which will translate into making sure those around him are okay. Especially his best friend. He’s used to caring for people in his own way, and he will probably fall into a caretaker mode really easily as he gets to know people and makes friends.
